Habeas Corpus Restoration Act of 2007

Posted by Gerald on June 8, 2007

Senators Arlen Spector and Patrick Leahy have introduced a bill (S. 185) in the Senate to restore the rights of detainees in Guantanamo Bay to challenge thier imprisonment.  Congressman Jerrold Nadler and Congresswoman Jane Harman have introduced the bill in the House (HR 1416).   The right of Habeas Corpus is one of the most fundamental protections of our liberties and it has been systematically weakened by the current Administration with the assistance of the last few Congresses, most notably throught the passage of the Military Commissions Act last year.  Restoring this right to the detainees helps to protect it for all of us, and would be a small step towards regaining our nation’s reputation for being a place of liberties secured by law.

I’d like to ask anyone who reads this to urge your representatives and Senators to support this legislation.  One way to take action would be through Amnesty International USA.
